I would have to say the thing I love most about Auckland is not even in the city itself. Rather, I loved that we were able to take the ferry to nearby islands like Davenport and Waiheke Island. Davenport consists of a sleepy town full of shops and cafes. We walked up a very steep hill to find a fabulous view of the Auckland skyline. The next day, we decided to go to Waiheke which was definitely my favorite. The beach there is so beautiful with white sand and clear blue water. Overlooking the water, you see mountains in the distance and you feel like you are on a secluded island in the Carribean.

Auckland itself is a bustling city with a hectic business district. The sky tower seems like it can be seen from every angle and overtakes the other buildings. We ended up spending 6 days there, although we wanted to leave sooner to see other parts. However, the delay was that we bought a car, so it was worth it in the end! Our next stop was Rotorua….

Rotorua is not so much to look at..we spent most of our time at the ‘Thermal Wonderland’ which was full of geysers, volcanic craters and limestone rock. In the beginning, it was a little overwhelming because the smell of sulfur is so profuse,  but we got used to it.

Rotorua is pretty small, so there was  no trouble of getting lost. The city center is very quaint and in small pockets of the town, the sulfur smell was evident. This was also our first test to see how sleeping in the van would  be, and it was actually really comfortable! Next, we went on from a smaller town to the capital city-Wellington!

I really loved Wellington! The view of the harbor is really unique because the whole city lays on the tip of Cook Strait. I expected a busier urban scene considering the business district, art scene and political buildings are all crammed in one area, but it was surprisingly relaxed. We visited Te Papa, which is the national museum. It is a pretty new museum and cost NZ$300 million to construct.

A cool part of the city is what is called Cuba St. It is comparable to Elm St. But unlike Elm St., this region is closed off to cars, so people can roam free from shop to cafe without the  hassle of traffic. A lot of interesting street performers are set up all around, making a cozy environment for the public to watch. After a few days of camping out in Wellington, we were really eager to get on the ferry to the south island in the direction of Picton which was our next stop!

Die erste Woche haben wir in Auckland verbracht, ein paar Formalitaeten wie Steuernummer, Konto, etc. erledigt und haben ein Auto gekauft. Die Wahl ist auf einen Toyota Lucida, Baujahr 1994 gefallen. Ein praktischer 8-Sitzer in dem wir mittlerweile schon 10 Naechte geschlafen haben. Er schluckt Diesel, was noch gut fuer den Verbrauch ist. Benzin ist hier wesentlich billiger, ein Liter Normal kostet ca. 85 Euro-Cent.

Auckland ist als Stadt ganz okay, sehenswerter sind allerdings die vor Auckland gelegenen Inseln / Staedte. Devonport ist recht schoen, aber klein. Es gibt da nicht sonderlich viel zu sehen, aber es hat ein nettes Flair. Waiheke Island, mit einer Faehre ca. 35 Minuten von Auckland entfernt erinnert etwas an eine tropische Insel. Am besten kann man es entweder mit einem Fahrrad oder einer Rundfahrt erkunden. Wir haben uns fuer die Rundfahrt entschieden, da es an dem Tag ca. 35 Grad heiss war.

Nach Auckland ging es nach Rotorua, weil wir an einem Tag nicht die 7 Stunden bis nach Wellington fahren wollten und weil es empfohlen wurde von mehren Leuten. Rotorua ist in den Bergen gelegen, direkt bei der Bay of Plenty. Rotorua zeichnet sich durch den verfaulten Eier gestank aus, der von den ziemlich aktiven Vulkanen kommt. Vulkane gibts auf Fotos zu sehen.

Dann Wellington. Wellington ist unglaublich schoen gelegen. In einer ziemlich grossen Bucht. Wesentlich schoener als Auckland ist besonders erwaehnenswert das Te Papa, ein Museum das meiner Meinung nach seinesgleichen sucht. Fuer 350 Millionen Dollar aus Steuergeldern erbaut, ist der Eintritt kostenlos. Nur wenige Sonderausstellungen kosten extra. Es ist ein Erlebnis dort reinzugehen. In Wellington waren auch die Sevents, ein Rugby Turnier, wo interessanterweise jeder kostuemiert auftaucht. Daher waren sehr viele Betrunkene und komisch aussehende Gestalten in Wellington an diesem Wochenende. Nach Wellington ging es mit der Faehre nach Picton auf der Suedinsel, aber fuer die Suedinsel muss ich mir mal wannanders Zeit nehmen, folgt aber sehr bald.

Der Weg vom Flughafen zu unserem Hotel (Ramee Guestline Hotel, Einrichtung relativ gut, leider hat es 3 Nachtclubs mit im Gebäude und daher sehr laut bis 3 Uhr morgens) in der Al Rigga Road war eine Rundfahrt durch Wolkenkratzer und sonstige beeindruckende Gebäude, und durchaus das erste große Abenteuer, denn Autofahrer kennen in Dubai keine Verkehrsregeln. Nötigung liegt hier an der Tagesordnung und gehört scheinbar zum guten Ton auf der Straße. Ist kein Platz auf der Spur auf die man will, drängelt man einfach solange bis sich jemand ergibt und man Platz auf der Spur findet.

Gleich am ersten Nachmittag haben wir uns auf dem Weg zu dem berühmten Al Arab gemacht. Oft gesehen im Fernsehen und endlich steht man direkt davor, am Strand, aus ca. 500m Entfernung. Der Eintritt dort ist dann doch zu teuer. Aber es ist schon beeindruckend, wie es da am Strand steht. Das Al Arab war gute 20km von unserem Hotel entfernt, die Taxifahrt dorthin kostete uns 10 Euro. Anschließend machten wir uns am Strand auf um Richtung unseres Hotels zurückzulaufen, nach guten 2 Stunden und ca. 10% des Weges auf der Karte haben wir dann aber aufgegeben und ein Taxi genommen, dass sich in 45 Minuten durch die Rush Hour in Dubai gekämpft hat, und den unglaublichen Preis von 6 Euro gekostet hat. Taxis sind in Dubai scheinbar die günstigste Methode von A nach B zu kommen. Aber nicht nur Taxis sind in Dubai sind günstig, auch das Essen. Ein Fast Food Menü (McDonalds ist einfach eine gute Referenz) kostet in Dubai 2,50 Euro im Vergleich zu den deutschen Preisen unschlagbar.

Da wir durch die Taxifahrten schon Stadtrundfahrten gemacht haben und sehr viel von Dubai gesehen haben, sind wir am nächsten Tag in den Park Dubai Creek gefahren. Kaum dort angekommen, haben wir eine Gruppe verschwitzter Männer in roter Trainingskleidung gesehen. Auf den zweiten Blick hab ich dann erkannt wer diese Männer sind. Es waren die Spieler vom VfB Stuttgart, keine 5 Meter von mir entfernt. Da die Spieler sofort wieder losgelaufen sind und Armin Veh und Horst Heldt sich gerade ausruhten, hab ich die Gelegenheit gehabt ein Foto mit ihnen zu machen.

Anschließend sind wir mit einem Taxi von dem Park in ein Einkaufszentrum gefahren. Der Taxifahrer hat uns direkt zum VIP Eingang kutschiert, da wird man dann schon königlich empfangen. Das Einkaufszentrum hatte so ungefähr jedes Geschäft das man sich vorstellen konnte. Und einen künstlichen Fluß in der Mitte des Einkaufszentrum, auf dem man Bootsrundfahrten machen konnte. Unglaublich was die in Dubai alles bauen. In dem Einkaufszentrum selbst findet man dann noch von Kino über Bowlingbahn und Fitness-Center alle Arten von Freizeitbeschäftigungen, so dass man dort eigentlich schon einen ganzen Tag verbringen könnte.

Leider hatten wir in der kurzen Zeit, die wir in Dubai verbracht haben, nicht Zeit noch mehr zu sehen, aber Dubai ist sicher ein Reiseziel das auf meiner Liste stehen bleibt, denn Dubai macht definitiv Lust auf mehr, und das obwohl ich normalerweise kein Freund von so großen Städten bin. Die Freundlichkeit der Menschen ist beeindruckend und man merkt, dass die Freundlichkeit ehrlich und aufrichtig ist. Man wird immer angelächelt und jeder in Dubai spricht Englisch, so dass die Verständigung eigentlich ganz gut klappt.
